Pono Santos

Provo

ponosantos AT gmail DOT com

Pono Santos began studying cello at age 12, two years after she started playing in her elementary school’s fifth grade orchestra. Growing up she studied with Valerie Doerrfeld and decided she wanted to study music when she got to BYU in 2009. She auditioned for the program her freshman year and wasn’t accepted, but felt that this was her calling, so all next year she practiced like a music major (3+ hours a day), worked hard, and attended masterclasses before reauditioning in 2011 and finally being accepted. Hard work has been a theme in Pono’s musical career and she believes that it is the key to success. Pono has played in the BYU Philharmonic, Chamber Orchestra, and Baroque Ensemble and sat principal in all three groups before graduating from BYU with her bachelor’s degree in April of 2017. She has toured Europe and the Philippines with orchestral groups from her high school and BYU.  At BYU she studied with Julie Bevans, Garrick Woods, Monika Rosborough-Bowman, and most recently, Michelle Kesler. She has spent the last two summers continuing her studies at the Brevard Music Festival where she was able to study with Alistair McRae and Benjamin Karp. She will be teaching some of the 160R students at BYU as adjunct faculty this year. And she plans on continuing her studies and auditioning for master’s programs in the near future.
